IMPORTANT INFORMATION. ALL ATHLETES MUST READ THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO RACE REGISTRATION.
2018 RACE DETAILS –
Registration will be located at Dolgellau Rugby Club, Marian Mawr Enterprise park, LL40 1UU. Registration will be open at 19:00 to 21:00 on Friday, 3rd August and 06:30 to 08:00 on Saturday, 4th August.
All athletes are required to register during the times noted above. You must sign in at the registration desk to be able to enter the event. This is where you’ll collect your race numbers, kit bags and swim cap. On the Friday registration, there will also be the opportunity to register your bike in readiness for transportation to the start line where it will be stored overnight in a secure location. We ask that all athletes register to receive their race pack, swim cap and kit bags during the times noted above.
It is recommended that you park your car at Dolgellau Rugby club (there is a council car park pay and display fee for this).
At registration you will receive your race numbers, a numbered swim cap and two kit bags. The two bags will be colour coded, and you will be instructed as to which bag to place your T1 kit in and the other bag will hold your T2 kit.
Once you have completed the swim section, leave your T1 kit bag at the bike rack area. T1 bag will be transported to T2 prior to your descent from the summit finish line.
Your T2 bag will be in T2 waiting for you when you complete the bike route. These will be racked up in race number order.
Note: If you are completing the extreme route, you have the option of returning into T2 after the first 9 miles of your 13 mile run. The first 9 miles is largely flat and on tarmac or tightly packed gravel. This gives you the option to travel light for the first 9 miles and then collect additional kit for the last 4 miles up to the summit. This does not apply for the sprint route.
Please ensure that your race numbers are clearly visible and securely attached at the front of your bike and on the back of your jersey. You are required to use the swim cap provided.
Having registered in Dolgellau, race athletes will be taken by coach to the start line. Your kit bags and bike will also be transported with you. Registration closes at 08:00. The coach will leave at 08:20. If you are not on the coach, you will have to make your own way to Tywyn. If you intend to make your own way to Tywyn, please inform the registration desk.
Given the nature of the course, there are prolonged distances on the cycle route and run route, for both the sprint and extreme distances, that have no marshals, no phone coverage and not a great deal by way of shops or phone kiosks. Please ensure you have basic tools and bike puncture repair kit with you.
There will be a sweeper car on the bike section for the sprint and extreme route. The car will be carrying a limited number of spare tubes and a track pump. No assistance can be given other than the use of this kit. All repairs are to be carried out by the athlete. If you are unable to continue for whatever reason, REMAIN ON THE ROUTE and you will be collected by the sweeper car and returned to the registration area with your bike.
There will be a sweeper bike following the last runner on the extreme route, until you begin the ascent of Cader Idris, after which a sweeper team will be walking the mountain. If you encounter difficulty at any point on the run route REMAIN WHERE YOU ARE and you will be assisted by the sweeper team and/or our Mountain safety team.
First aid teams will be located at Tywyn beach (T1) and Ty Nant Car Park (T2). Specialist Sea Safety and Mountain Safety teams will be on hand during the swim and mountain sections.
There will be water available at T1 for you to fill bottles prior to the race.
There will be a feed station at Penhelyg Arms hotel, Aberdyfi, LL35 0LT. This is at 31 miles on the extreme cycle route only. There will be Water, Lucozade Sport (orange), Flap jacks, Haribo, Bananas and Wild Trail bars.
The sprint cycle route is 22 miles long. There is no feed station prior to T2.
There will be a feed station at T2, Ty Nant, Snowdonia National Park Car Park, LL40 1TN. This is at the end of the cycle route for both sprint and extreme distances. There will be Water, Lucozade Sport (orange), Flap jacks, Haribo, Bananas and Wild Trail bars.
There will be a feed station at Penmaenpool, nr George III Hotel, LL40 1YD. This at 6 miles on the extreme run route only. There will be Water, Lucozade Sport (orange), Flap jacks, Haribo, Bananas and Wild Trail bars.
The extreme run route returns to T2 at circa 10 miles into the run. This immediately precedes the ascent to the summit. The T2 feed station will still be open. You can also return to your kit bag to collect mountain kit, should you wish to. It is recommended that you take a lightweight jacket to the summit, in any weather. If conditions dictate, you will be advised on additional kit required for a safe mountain ascent.
There will be water only on the ridge way over looking Islawr-dref at 1.5 miles into the sprint run route, and 12 miles into the extreme run route.
Summit feed station. There will be water, a recovery shake (chocolate), and limited food available at the summit. You will also be issued with a foil blanket.
The race finishes at the summit of Cader Idris. Having finished the race, athletes are required to make their own way back to T2. This is a 5km descent and can take up to 1hr 30mins. Please plan accordingly by carrying suitable kit for the conditions. Even on a warm day, it is recommended that a lightweight jacket is carried to the summit as a bare minimum. You will be advised of any additional requirements according to the weather. This is a mountain top finish line and your safety is our priority, not your PB!
Having descended to T2, you will need to sign out at the Caderman event tent. This is to ensure that all athletes have returned from the summit and that all kit has been collected. At the sign out tent you will be given your T1 and T2 kit bag and access to collect your bike from the bike racks. You can not collect your bike without having signed out.
Once you have signed out and collected your bike, you can opt to leave of your own accord, if friends or family have followed your progress and brought a vehicle to T2, you are now free to leave. You can also cycle (down hill) to Dolgellau Rugby club, or jump in our minibus which will transport you to Dolgellau Rugby Club, where there will be free access to changing rooms and showers. The bar will also be open and trophy presentations will be held here at 14:00 for the sprint route and 16:00 for the extreme winners. It is recommended that you park your car at Dolgellau Rugby club (there is a council car park pay and display fee for this).
